FURJ
(Florida Undergraduate Research Journal)
Who
- FURJ is the research publishing arm of FURA (Florida Undergraduate Research Association)
- FURA is the organization behind the conference called FURC (Florida Undergraduate Research Conference) which is Stage 9 on the path to PCA.
What
- Publishing in a peer reviewed journal is the apex of academic work.
- The only achievement exceeding that would be to increase one's H index number, a measure of the reception of one's ideas in a discipline, which can only be done by ... yup ... publishing.
- FURJ's editorial and executive review follows blind peer-reviewed processes.
- The following are general guidelines from FURJ:
- All disciplines are welcome
- Submissions accepted throughout the year
- Size of papers: max 8,000 words
- Needs to use a discipline specific citation style
When
- In the past, we have worked on journal articles after PCA, which usually means Summer Term.
- Usually the rough draft is hammered out before or after PCA in the Spring term, and then the more refined, discipline specific paper is crafted over Summer term.
- Unlike PCA, the crafting of a research paper for publication must be discipline specific, with a focus on discipine specific langauge as well as discipline specific citable sources.
- Crafting a paper will need more time and energy than what is typically used for a whole 16 week course in most other subjects.
How
- The whole process is nearly a year long pathway.
- 1. Join a Humanities Themes, a Literature Themes, or an Introduction to Literature course with one of the following:
- Dr. Warren Jones
- Mr. Luke Leonard
- Mr. Robert Allen
- 2. In that course, the research paper will focus on a juncture between popular culture and academic thought.
- 3. In the Fall we submit abstracts to PCAACA.
- We'll hear from PCA about whose abstracts have been accepted by the end of the Fall term.
- 4. At the end of Fall term, we also submit abstracts to FURC (See Stage 9)
- We'll hear from FURC about whose abstracts have been accepted by the middle of January.
- 5. February, we go to FURC to poster present.
- 6. March or April (always the week leading up to Easter) we go to PCA to present.
- 7. Returning, we craft papers into publishable pieces over summer.
- 8. August or September, we submit papers to FURJ
Why
- Colleges are selecting future students less and less on numerics of GPAs and SAT/ACT scores and more on the ability to academically perform.
- That statement has always been true for graduate schools, from medical to the arts.
- Presenting at FURC, and/or presenting at PCAACA, and/or publishing in FURJ will significantly set you above other students in the quest for the next level of education.
