    Notes

    4th of July Tours

It was 94 degrees. We wore period costumes: three piece wool suits and multi-layered dresses. We stood on concrete in the sun for two hours. We refer to it as our "sweat-swimming tour". (See our smiling faces in Appendix B) This event was hosted by the North Brevard Heritage Foundation as a walking tour for people to hear about downtown Titusville. I performed as a talking tour guide with the assistance of two BCC students and one former BCC student.

    BCC

Brevard Community College (BCC) became Eastern Florida State College on July 1, 2013. While the school increased its number of 4 year degrees at the time, the name changes occurred across the state, removing the word community from all 2-year Florida colleges. In this vita I have designated the different campuses as M: Melbourne, PB as Palm Bay, C as Cocoa, and T as Titusville. PC is the Patrick center campus of BCC, which was closed immediately after 9/11.

    Communications

BCC used the word Communications instead of Composition for ENC 1101 and ENC 1102; years later the course name changed to its proper designation of Composition.

    DEOMI

The Department of Defense contracted BCC/EFSC to have 10-week Writing Programs taught at Patrick Air Force Base (PAFB) for the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI). PAFB is now called Patrick Space Force Base; since these were not college credits, teachers needed only a BA.

    DEOMI Lead Instructor

As the Lead Instructor at DEOMI supervising three other instructors, I had to also teach grammar skills and study skills courses.

    Domestic Violence Awareness Day

(Guest speaker Cassandra Schalkham from Serene Harbor Domestic Violence Shelter spoke to 15 different classes, giving a 15-20 minutes presentation and answer/question session on domestic violence, with a focus on dating violence.

    Florida Institute of Technology

After two years of being the copy Editor at BCC, the BCC Capsule Editor and I were recruited to revive The Crimson at FIT. However, FIT did not have a literature program, and I stayed only one semester to help with the The Crimson before moving on.

    Graduate Teaching Assistant

GTAs at UCF were teachers of Record for their own courses.

Honors go-to-person/expeditor/paper-peddler No official title exist for those on each campus who coordinate Honors' efforts, but in the Fall of 2009, I took on that role. Through marketing our campus' need for the courses to students and faculty, five other faculty began teaching honors on our campus over the next year, forming enough Honors courses and signing on nearly 30 Titusville residents that we have enough honors courses for student to acquire 18 hours and be able to graduate with Honors.

These are Honors seminars meant to focus a specific study. The best comparison is that they are capstone courses.

The first Invisible People installation was in 2004 as a project questioning what art is. In 2007, we repurposed that installation idea into Invisible Victims and created over 200 plastic/tape sculptures to represent the many people in our community who suffer from domestic violence. In 2008 on a different campus, we created and installed 100s of the Invisible Victims for a Domestic Violence Awareness day.

Considered a visual reader's circle, this event gave film and comm. 2 students the opportunity to show film shorts that had in some way impacted their lives.

Nib n' Ink Creative Writing Club

, reader's Circle,The Pink Paper, and The Chapped Booklet

Then, it was the oldest student-driven club on Titusville Campus, founded by Kathy Patria, that allowed a creative outlet for writers. Yearly, we hosted two events, a Reader's Circle and a Poetry slam, and we published a humorous yet informative newsletter, The Pink Paper, and a peer-reviewed fiction and non-fiction journal, The Chapped Booklet. Starting late in the Fall 2009 term, I acted as sole advisor for two consecutive terms, then returned the club to her and became a co-advisor for the next 3 years. The three-fold purpose in forming The Chapped Booklet was to allow our students the opportunity to have their work selected through a peer-reviewed process and published in a journal, to directly involve students in the peer-review process, and to inspire students to send work on to Proteus. In Fall 2009, the first The Chapped Booklet's material was collected and put through the peer review process. Editing and Layout were done over the Holiday break. Printing occurred in January 2010. Due to subsequent semester difficulties with club funding, The Chapped Booklet has not been published, but with recent changes in club funding, The Chapped Booklet will go to press by the end of this current term.

    Readers

Over 45 students, a collective of Kathy Patria and my classes, attended the evening of music, skits, and readings. The event continued yearly, bi-annually, and soon became a tradition held once a year in the library, hosted by the library, catering to hundreds of students and community members. In 2021, after Covid, the event maintains.

    Number of concurrent courses

the use of [ ] are to indicate the number of sections of each course in a given term.

    Number of concurrent courses

Over 50 students volunteered over 500 hours at the Titusville Playhouse. The students, having a wide range of skills, did everything from air-conditioning cleaning and repair to painting the Main Lobby, and from cleaning the workshop to straightening and organizing the thousands of pieces in their wardrobe, change rooms, and prop rooms.

    PCAACA and Conference Mentoring

    Happy Accidents

In the Fall of 2012, I wandered into Thursday night's Humanities Special Themes on British Humor in Sci-Fi-- and realized I had nothing prepared for the class. I had plenty of material in my head, enough for many semesters' courses, but nothing specifically arranged for that night. The culmination of my 14 years of teaching experience lead me to the only viable solution to my lack of planning... I stalled. I suggested, in my stalling, that they all go on-line and find conferences, Sci-Fi conferences, that undergrads could present at. It was a fool's errand. Conferences are for academics, with some only allowing Grad students to poster, but not present.

I sat up front, hastily cribbing notes and collecting ideas toward the evening's focus; ten minutes later, two people, on either side of the class room, said "Found one." They had found the same black and white, unformatted web page, something called PCAACA, Sci-Fi and Fantasy area. I went from PC to PC, reading the call for papers. Unlike many of the conference call for papers they had found, this page did not say no undergraduates.

huh, I muttered. Sean, the student who had spoke first, looked up at me expectantly, as if he'd win a prize for finding a conference first.

Lemme look into that, I said.

I went back to my PC, found the page, and read it over and over again. My mind was falling over itself, unable to ask full questions of itself: Could we... How can we... is it possible... what should we do next...

Years later, even now, I see that moment, on that evening, filmically. Camera revolving around me, a slow spinning and rising arc shot, some single note humming forth as a soundtrack, low, rhythmic, ominous at first, but changing, inspiring, hopeful...possible.

I have for decades attempted to discern what happens in those moments, and there are at least 86 other moments like that listed herein where the same has occurred, my mind moving faster than I can follow, doubts encircling.

I had never presented at a conference, having only published a few poems and no papers. Would I be able to mentor 17 students towards crafting conference levels papers? With only five weeks to the abstract due date on the CFP? Are these freshman and sophomores possibly even ready for--

Moving and speaking before I even realized it, "Here's what were gunna do..."

In one evening, in one class, in 10 minutes time, I revamped the entire course. I didn't really know what I was doing, but my brain did; I was, as always, just the translator. We would, I declared, each arrive at a conference level thesis and abstract, within the month or so left before the deadline.

I imagined that this would be a good praxis. We'd focus on producing original ideas in Sci-Fi research, we'd write the abstracts and submit them, and they would realize the difficulties of such rigor when they were denied acceptance.

    Number of concurrent courses

As Curators, Kathy Patria and I along with 9 students worked from November 2008 until the end of January 2009 organizing local artifacts (that are up to 100 years old) and creating a series of museum display settings (comprising over 200 separate items). These settings were first exhibited at the "Preservation as Art" fundraiser for the North Brevard Heritage Foundation at La Cita Country Club and, then, for the remainder of 2009 and half of 2010 in our campus library. Next, they were placed in a variety of buildings throughout Brevard.

    Rollins College, Brevard Campus

Rollins College had a Brevard campus in West Melbourne. That campus closed in the early 2000s due to growing competition in Brevard county from UCF satellite campuses. The WM means West Melbourne to distinguish those from later entries concerning Rollins (MC) main campus.
