  • Use an APA Title page.
    • Include title page as page count, but (despite what Purdue shows) DO NOT put a page number on the title page.
    • I will be checking your digital Word document to make sure you used ONE document and learned how to paginate different sections
    • Repeat the title, centered, at the top of the actual writing.
  • Use present tense
    • YES: Present tense: Smith's article explains how Vikings...
    • NO: Past tense: Smith's worked explained how Vikings...
  • DO NOT use first person
  • DO NOT use any variation of the word you
  • Paraphrase and cite sources; do not quote sources word for word
  • Use ONLY this source for your references.
  • Outlining response to questions
    • Write out an answer to the question.
    • Discern two or three ideas that comprise your answer.
    • IN explanatory paragraphs, discuss each of those ideas in depth in their own paragraphs.
    • Create an introduction (to start the paper above those explanatory paragraphs) that STATES the question and answer as well as the associated readings and other readings.
  • Structure of writing
    • Introduction stating problem, your "answer," and some references as a literature review.
    • para 2 explains a part of the "answer"
    • para 3 explains a part of the "answer"
    • Lather, rinse, repeat as many paragraphs as needed.
    • Conclusion: suggest a few concepts that connect with your "answer" that you, or someone else, could continue to research
    • Reference page of ALL references in the paper
  • Problems of writing
    • Paragraphs should be no more than 1/2 page in size and no less than 1/3 page in size.
    • Every paragraph should begin stating exactly what the paragraph will cover.
    • Avoid passive voice where possible (to-be verbs) and weak language
