Device Papers
Purpose of assignment:
- To Learn, decipher, and discuss literary devices in fiction.
- Choose three literary devices for each Device Paper and discuss those devices as found in the currently assigned story. You cannot write about a device more than once in the term; in other words, by the end of the term, you will have covered 15 of the 29 literary devices.
Assignment:
MLA paper with Works Cited:
- Font-type: Times New Roman
- Font-Size: only 12 point
- Indents: first line of each paragraph of the body indents 1/2" (not five space bar clicks)
- Spacing: Double space every line inthe paper (no more, no less)
- Margins: 1" from all sides (page number header will be withn that inch, and that is ok.) From the top, your name must be 1"
- No Bold
- No Underlines
- No exclamation marks--EVER!!!!!!!!
- First Paragraph: Introduction
- Summarize the entire paper
- Second Paragraph: Scope/summary of text
- Summarize the stories
- Use your own words
- Avoid plagiarism
- Third paragraph: "Theory"
- Give a meaningful discussion of the three devices you will use
- You can use examples from other pieces of literature or film to disuss each device
- Be careful not to plagiarize "definitions" of devices.
- Fourth Paragraph: "Analysis"
- Discuss each chosen literary device as it relates to BOTH stories
- Quote each story in your paper to exactly locate the use of each device
- Fifth Paragraph: Conclusion
- Discuss at least two other devices and suggest that they can be used to investigate/interrogate/analyze the story.
Note: A paragraph is 7-15 college levels sentences (i.e. subordinating or complex).
